You can tan safely all year round underneath this sun lamp if you follow these guidelines correctly. Our skin is tanned by invisible ultraviolet radiation from the sun. This radiation darkens the pigment already present in our skin and stimulates the formation of more pigment known as melanin. The production of new melanin cells and the darkening of these make the skin stay tanned longer. There are a number of different types of ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet A radiation (UVA), which colors the pigment cells brown, and ultraviolet B radiation (UVB), which stimulates the production of melanin cells, but also causes sunburn, are the most well-known types.
